In response to requests from a number of beekeepers, Keith Tignor (Virginia State Apiarist) has supplied this list of individuals offering queens and NUC's for sale. The list includes sources within Virginia and from neighboring states. Beekeepers are encouraged to obtain queens and bees from local sources.

1. New, laying queens: $20
2. Bee package #1: 07 queen with 5 med frames of bees and brood: 50$
3. Bee package #2: 08 queen + bees and brood on new frames and comb (3 months to build package): $20 + $10/frame with new frames and wax foundation exchange.
4. Bee package #3: 08 queen + bees and brood on your frames and wax foundation (3 months to transfer bees and draw comb): $20 + $10/frame
5. Bee package #4: 08 queen and 2-3 pounds of bees in a box: $65.

Bee packages come with email mentoring.

On-site hive inspections and consultations: $10 + 25 cents/mile travel reimbursement.

Honey extraction: $8/gallon

News Flash

Did You Know:

  • Honey bees' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz.
  • A Honey bee flies 15 M.P.H.
  • During the summer, the typical honey bee colony contains between 40,000 to 70,000 bees.
  • A Honey bee has 5 eyes, two of which are compound and three simple eyes. 
  • Secreted from glands, beeswax is used by the honeybee to build honey comb. It is used by humans in drugs, cosmetics, artists' materials, furniture polish and candles.
  • Honey bees are not aggressive by nature, and will not sting unless protecting their hive from an intruder or are unduly provoked. 
  • Worker bees cooperate to find food and use a pattern of "dancing" (known as the waggle dance) to communicate information regarding resources with each other.
